Bush: Miers Will Win Spot on Supreme Court

Posted on: Friday, 7 October 2005, 15:00 CDT

President Bush Friday reiterated his support for Harriet Miers to join the U.S. Supreme Court and predicted she is going to be on the bench.

Bush nominated Miers this week to fill the Supreme Court spot currently occupied by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who wishes to retire. Miers and the president have a long association, but the nominee, currently White House counsel, has no experience as a judge and little to check to get a sense of her judicial philosophy.

Ironically, it has been conservatives, long supporters of the Bush administration who voiced concern over Miers' qualifications. But the president said, Harriet Miers is an extraordinary nominee.

Asked about withdrawing the nomination, Bush said: No, she is going to be on the bench, she'll be confirmed -- and when she's on the bench people will see a fantastic woman who is honest, open, humble and capable of being a great Supreme Court judge.

There has been no timetable set for Senate approval of the Miers nomination.
