New York Mayor Bloomberg poised for big win in mayoral race: poll

NEW YORK, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg not only appeared set to trounce opponent Fernando Ferrer and win re- election on Tuesday, he would defeat former mayors Rudy Giuliani, David Dinkins and Ed Koch, as well as Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, if pitted against any of them today, according to a poll released Sunday.

Newsday/NY1 News poll among 606 likely voters indicated that they would pick Bloomberg over every other potential candidate named in the poll — and not by small margins.

Bloomberg appears headed toward an all-out general election rout, with the gap between the mayor and his Democratic opponent growing as wide as 32 points, a margin that has increased by 20 points since polls taken at the time of the September primaries.

A powerful 72 percent of those who said they are likely to vote in the mayoral election Tuesday said they approve of the job Bloomberg is doing, and give him a record margin of victory over Ferrer, 60 percent to 28 percent, according to the poll.

Voters in almost every major group, including whites, blacks, women, Jews, young people and poor people, some of them have consistently voted for Democrats, are pulling the lever for Republican Bloomberg, according to the poll results.

While the billionaire mayor has outspent his rival by more than 55 million dollars, an 8-to-1 imbalance Ferrer has criticized, voters are so hot on Bloomberg that 76 percent of them said it made no difference to them that the mayor was spending a fortune on the campaign.

Ferrer’s spokesman, Jen Bluestein, said it should come as no surprise that the Newsday/NY1 poll shows Bloomberg beating the other politicians and potential candidates. “The one thing they all share is an absence of 100 million dollars,” he said, noting the poll shows the power of money to affect positive visions.
