Leahy Comes Out Against Alito Nomination
Posted on: Thursday, 19 January 2006, 18:00 CST
U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said Thursday he will vote against the nomination of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Leahy, the ranking democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the announcement during a speech and his office confirmed the expected vote in a release.
The Leahy announcement is considered a sign of how the overall voting will go for Alito when the committee considers the nomination next week and the full Senate votes before the end of the month. The decision is expected to break along party lines and, with 55 Republicans in the Senate, Alito is expected to win confirmation.
Democrats have questioned Alito's stances on abortion and civil rights but Leahy said his biggest concern with the nominee was in regards to executive power.
At a time when the president is seizing unprecedented power, the Supreme Court needs to be a check and balance. I have no confidence that Judge Alito will provide that check and balance, Leahy said.
