BBC Monitoring Quotes From Pakistan's Urdu Press 3 Mar 06

Posted on: Friday, 3 March 2006, 06:00 CST

The following is a selection of quotes from editorials published in 3 Mar editions of Urdu-language Pakistan newspapers available to BBCM.

US-India civil nuclear cooperation deal

Nawa-i-Waqt [Islamabad; pro-Muslim League]: After visiting Afghanistan, US President Bush has arrived in New Delhi where a civilian nuclear agreement has been inked between the two countries. Pakistan has said that in order to maintain the balance of power in the region, a similar agreement should also be reached with Pakistan. The only way to steer ourselves out of the difficulty we face is to bid farewell to the so-called US friendship and free outselves from US slavery. This should be done during President Bush's current visit.

Bush visit to South Asia

Jang [Rawalpindi; commercial]: President Bush's visit to South Asia is of immense importance in view of the global scenario. We hope he will take a realistic view of the regions's problems and help resolve them.

Ausaf [Islamabad; pro-Islamist]: Millions of people in 20 Indian states took to the streets to express their feelings against US President Bush who is currently visiting South Asia. The large- scale mass demonstrations in India have proved that a vast majority of people intensely hate President Bush because of the USA's hegemonic policies. We say the leaders of Pakistan, India and other countries should take into account the feelings of their people instead of blindly supporting US policies. They should play their role in stopping the war on terrorism and the establishment of capitalistic rule.

Karachi blast

Nawa-i-Waqt [Islamabad; pro-Muslim League]: At least four people, including a US diplomat, were killed and 50 injured in a bomb blast outside the US consulate in Karachi. US President Bush, while condemning the attack, said it would not affect his scheduled visit to Pakistan. Our problems have multiplied by becoming part of the US war on terror. After the tragic incident in Karachi, our leaders should review their policy and use their resources to protect the lives and properties of their people.

Ausaf [Islamabad; pro-Islamist]: The tragic blast in Karachi ahead of President Bush's visit to Pakistan is not just sad but dangerous for the national interests of the country. We fear Indian and Afghan agencies may be involved in the incident to make Mr. Bush cancel his visit to Pakistan and obstruct progress on the issue of Kashmir. The government should expose the conspiracy of its enemies.
