Nation Talks to God: Grand Forks Joins Country in Marking National Day of Prayer.

May 5--Raised hands and fervent petitions were evident as several pastors joined about two dozen people at noon Thursday to mark the National Day of Prayer in Faith Community Church in Grand Forks.

It was sponsored by the Evangelical Pastors Fellowship and billed as interdenominational.

The people attending mostly were evangelicals, but a member of the Baha'i faith also was there. The Baha'i religion started in Iran more than 160 years ago as an offshoot of Islam that stresses peace, the unity of humanity and world religions.

President Bush spoke about the day in Washington.

"I say thanks to the millions of Americans who pray each day for our nation, our troops and our elected leaders. Prayer is a gift from Almighty God that transforms us, whether we bow our heads in solitude or offer swift and silent prayers in times of trial. Prayer humbles us by reminding us of our place in creation. Prayer strengthens us by reminding us that God loves and cares for each and every soul in His creation. And prayer blesses us by reminding us that there is a divine plan that stands above all human plans."
