WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Friday confirmed telecommunications lawyer Robert McDowell to fill a Republican seat on the Federal Communications Commission bring the agency's board to full-strength.
McDowell's appointment means that any 2-2 deadlocks at the agency can now be broken. The FCC regulates the telecommunications and media industry. With a Republican majority, the FCC is expected to begin a review that could lead to easing media ownership restrictions.
McDowell, has been a lawyer for Comptel, a trade association that represents telephone and Internet companies that compete against bigger carriers like AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications.
The FCC has been tied with two Republicans and two Democrats for more than a year. McDowell would fill a seat that expires June 30, 2009.
Sen. John Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, had put a hold on McDowell's nomination for almost two months.
