Canada optimistic on lumber deal, but work to do
TORONTO (Reuters) – Canada’s Trade Minister said on
Wednesday he remains optimistic the softwood lumber treaty with
the United States will garner substantial support from Canadian
producers, but agreed that work was still needed to address
critics’ remaining concerns.
David Emerson, who met with chief executives of the major
lumber producers in Toronto, stopped short of saying there was
enough support for the accord for the minority Conservative
government to put it to Parliament for a vote this fall.
