House Slams Bush Iraq Plan

U.S. lawmakers ended four days of debate Friday with a non-binding House resolution rejecting the president's plan to shore up troops in Iraq.
The 246-182 vote was no big surprise with the Democratic majority winning over a significant number of Republicans in the symbolic vote supporting U.S. troops in Iraq but giving no support to President George W. Bush, the New York Times reported.
The House action sets the stage for senators on Saturday as they debate whether to address the administrations policy in Iraq, the newspaper noted.
During the 44-hour long House debate, Republican minority leader John A. Boehner warned lawmakers they were treading a very treacherous path, while Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., urged her colleagues to give voice to their opposition to Bush's plan.
Boehner warned the vote, symbolic as it was, could result in a loss of funding for troops fighting in Iraq.
The White House took note of the House vote in a statement posted Friday on its official Web site.
Soon, Congress will have the opportunity to show its support for the troops in Iraq by funding the supplemental appropriations request the president has submitted, and which our men and women in combat are counting on, the White House said. The president believes that the Congress should provide the full funding and flexibility our Armed Forces need to succeed in their mission to protect our country.
