No Vote on Iraq Resolution in Senate

February 17, 2007

The House resolution against sending more than 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq failed to win enough votes to get to the Senate floor Saturday.

Seven Republicans bucked their party leadership to vote with the Democrats, The New York Times reported, suggesting the depth of President Bush’s loss of support on Iraq. The procedural vote was 56-34 to open debate, with four more required to end the stalemate.

A majority of the United States Senate just voted on Iraq, and a majority of the United States Senate is against the escalation in Iraq, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said, withdrawing the resolution.

Republicans accused the Democrats of trying to limit debate by refusing to allow a vote on a resolution against cutting funding for the military in Iraq.

The House of Representatives approved the resolution on the troop increase Friday, 246-183. Only two Democrats opposed it, while 17 Republicans voted for it.
