WASHINGTON — Tommy G. Thompson, the former governor of Wisconsin who served as President Bush’s secretary of health and human services, said on Sunday that he would seek the Republican nomination for president.
Thompson said he was the most “reliable conservative” among the already crowded field of Republican contenders. Moreover, he said he had experience in assembling state and federal budgets.
Thompson said he has “a completely different strategy” on Iraq. He said as president, he would require the Iraqis to decide if they wanted U.S. troops to stay there.
