Clinton Urges Bush to Come to Table

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, during a campaign stop in Iowa, said Tuesday Democrats should stand firm on a deadline for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.

Clinton urged President Bush to seek common ground with Democrats, The New York Times reported.

I’m not ready to concede that we shouldn’t take a tough negotiating stance to figure out whether there can be some movement, the New York Democrat and presidential candidate said. We need to change the approach of the White House, which means you’ve got to stand firm and say, ‘We don’t expect you to veto something that represents the will of the American people.’

Clinton, who toured a bio-fuels plant, had no suggestions on what Democrats should do if Bush vetoes the emergency appropriations bill. But she spoke of her husband’s ability to negotiate with a Republican Congress.

We would stake out one position, they would stake out one position, she said. And then people would begin to try to figure out how to narrow the difference. That’s what should be happening here.
