Obama Out-Raised Clinton in First Quarter

Posted on: Monday, 16 April 2007, 00:00 CDT

The presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., out-raised that of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., in the first quarter of 2007, campaign reports show.

Obama raised $5 million more than Clinton during the period, but Clinton has more money in hand than any other 2008 presidential hopeful, The Washington Post reported.

Because of controlled spending and an infusion of cash from her senate campaign accounts, Clinton finished the first quarter with $24 million to spend on Democratic primaries -- and another $7 million to use if she becomes the Democratic nominee -- newly released campaign fundraising reports showed.

Obama had not released a final accounting of how much he has spent on his campaign to date.

Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., finished the quarter with $10 million on hand, the Post said.

The reports show Democratic Party donors are giving significantly more money than Republicans to presidential campaigns, and using the Internet to make far more small donations, the newspaper said.
