Bush Vetoes Bill, Says Give Surge a Chance

Posted on: Tuesday, 1 May 2007, 21:00 CDT

U.S. President George W. Bush vetoed the Iraq war funding bill Tuesday because it contains deadlines he considers tantamount to setting a date for defeat.

Bush said he understands the $124 billion measure requiring U.S. troops to start exiting Iraq by Oct. 1 was meant by some to be a political statement. They made their point. Now it is time to put politics behind us and support our troops, he said in delivering his veto message at the White House.

The president said he would invite congressional leaders to the White House Wednesday to start working on a bill both sides could support.

He said people should wait at least until the end of summer to see if the surge effort is working to restore peace to Iraq.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Bush misrepresented the bill in his veto speech. The president wants a blank check. The Congress is not going to give it to him, she said. We will work to find common ground. But there is great distance between us right now.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the veto means denying our troops the resources and the strategy they need.
