Jul. 10–MCALESTER — Municipal water customers will receive a credit of up to $90 beginning with bills later this month.

The credit is a refund for a $3 fee the city had charged between July 1, 2004, and Dec. 31, 2006, for additions to its landfill. The fee was to have ended July 1, 2004.

The City Council decided to credit water account holders who were charged during the period, or to issue refund checks if they no longer hold a water account.

The maximum amount that a person who held a water account during that time can receive is $90.

The $90 credit for those who still have the accounts will begin with bills going out July 30 for customers on the north side of the city. Customers on the south side will receive the credit with bills on Aug. 15.

City Manager Mark B. Roath said the total overcharge during the 2-1/2-year period was about $611,000.

The council has since established a similar fee of $3.89 a month.

The city has about 7,700 water customers.
