Las Vegas, Jan. 6 (Jiji Press)–Shipments of the Sony Corp. group’s PlayStation 3 video game console in North America totaled some 1.2 million units in the Nov. 23-Dec. 31 period, Sony said Sunday.

During the year-end shopping period, shipments of the PlayStation 2 machine reached 1.3 million units, and those of the PlayStation Portable game console came to 1.4 million units, the company said.

As a result, total PlayStation shipments in the North American market came to some 3.9 million units, it said.

The PS3 machine’s strong sales performance has further strengthened the Blu-ray Disc format’s dominance over the High- Definition DVD format in the race to become the new optical disc standard, Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc., said in a statement.

Sony leads a consortium promoting the Blu-ray Disc format. The HD DVD format is being promoted by a camp led by Toshiba Corp. .END
