ADInstruments Pushes the Frontiers of Secondary School Science Teaching

Posted on: Monday, 23 July 2007, 09:10 CDT

ADInstruments, Inc., a global supplier of data acquisition and analysis solutions for life science researchers and educators, is proud to be a part of the American Physiological Society's Frontiers in Physiology fellowship program. At the program's Science Teaching Forum, ADInstruments application scientist Alecia Riley will present LabTutor(R), the revolutionary software for life science laboratory teaching.

Frontiers in Physiology aims to enhance middle and high school science education by building relationships between research scientists and science teachers, and integrating web-based technologies into classrooms. The professional development program requires each participating teacher to undertake a year-long online pedagogy course, and experience research first-hand by working full-time in a physiology laboratory for seven to eight weeks over the summer. The fellowship program is supported by the American Physiological Society and the National Institutes of Health.

Frontiers in Physiology teacher fellows attend a week-long Science Teaching Forum in Virginia in the middle of their research laboratories experiences. At the Forum, participants from across the United States meet and discuss how to apply both their laboratory and online learning experience in their classrooms.

One instructional activity of the Forum focuses on health and exercise science. In enhancing this focus, Alecia Riley will demonstrate LabTutor's Cardiovascular Effects of Exercise experiment at the Forum on Tuesday, July 24. The experiment leads students step-by-step through laboratory set up and procedures so they can successfully acquire and analyse cardiorespiratory signals.

LabTutor experiments embed background information, protocols and data acquisition and analysis capabilities within a numbered series of Internet Explorer windows. "This format uses students' confidence with web-based technologies to engage them in science, and improve learning outcomes," said Alecia Riley.

ADInstruments is proud to support the APS, and is one of two Life Science vendors contributing to the Science Teaching Forum. Wiley Publishers have donated physiology textbooks and workbooks.
