TPM Academy Students a Lucky Lot

November 7, 2004

IT is not common for higher institution students to spend their non-class hours in the company of professionals, but it is a common scenario for TPM Academy’s students.

Located at Bukit Jalil in the vicinity of Technology Park Malaysia, which houses close to 100 tenant companies, students of TPM Academy are a lucky lot, especially those who are doing Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

The reason is that almost 75 per cent of the 100 tenant companies are in the IT industry.

According to Norbani Abu Bakar, Head of the School of ICT and Multimedia, this opportunity is something which the students cannot afford to miss at any cost.

To excel in the IT world, one needs to really work hard. Here, at TPM Academy, they can see this with their own eyes”

Apart from this, the students taking up computer science at TPM Academy will have ample opportunity to do their practical training at one of these companies.

Currently, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at TPM Academy is a 2+2 twinning programme with California State University at Pomona.

Soon another 2+2 twinning programme tied with California State University at Sacramento will be offered.

Both programmes will see the students doing two years in Malaysia and the final two years in California.

California was specially chosen because it is where the Silicon Valley is located.

Students will be exposed to a wide variety of computer application, through lab assignments and projects, so as to enable them to further cultivate their fundamental knowledge in computer science.

TPM Academy provides state of the art facilities for its Computer Science students.

The Digital Media Centre which houses eight specialised laboratories ranging from web development to animation, provides opportunity for students to venture further in their respective fields.

“Our Digital Media Centre does not only provide a specialised laboratory, it also has Digital Studio facilities for the students.

The students can use the studio to produce audio-visual programme by using the technology that can be sourced through the Internet” she added.

The use of IT at TPM Academy does not only stop at the computer science lab, but stretches to its electronic library with easy access to 10,000 online journals including ACM (for Computer Science and IT Journals), Springerlinkberlag (for Science Journals).

Apart from Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, TPM also offers Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration under the 2+2 twinning arrangement with California State University.
