BEIJING -- Construction crews working at Beijing's main airport unearthed a fossilized thigh bone of an elephant that lived 30,000 years ago, a news report said Thursday.
The bone is 3 feet 9 inches long and is believed to belong to a palaeoloxodon, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing Wei Mingrui, an expert at the Beijing Natural History Museum.
A complete palaeoloxodon skeleton was once unearthed in Hebei province, which surrounds Beijing, Xinhua said. It said the beast roamed large areas in what is now China in the late Pleistocene period, which lasted from 1.6 million to just 10,000 years ago.
The newly found fossil "does provide very important clues and evidence for exploring the climate and geological changes" of the era, Wei was quoted as saying.
