Bridge Collapse Cleanup to Cost $15M

Minnesota expects to spend $15 million on initial cleanup efforts after Wednesday's deadly Mississippi River bridge collapse.
The cleanup will involve removing cars and debris from the accident site using cranes and barges, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
It's going to be a slow, tedious process, said Terry Voller, Minnesota Department of Transportation's project manager for the debris removal. It's not just a matter of taking pieces out and throwing them on a barge. The first priority will be recovery of the dead.
Five people died, eight more are missing and about 100 people were injured in the accident.
Meanwhile, the investigation into what caused the 40-year-old Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis to fall 64 feet into the river without warning during afternoon rush hour may take 18 months rather than 12 months as initially thought, a federal official said Sunday.
The continuing investigation will involve a long process of cataloging every item removed from the wreckage as part of the probe into what led to the disaster, the Star Tribune reported.
