Composting How-to Offered in Workshops
Free composting workshops to help Lancaster County residents recycle organic waste will be held at four locations in September and October.
The workshops are sponsored by the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority as part of its mission to manage the county’s waste and recyclable materials in an environmentally safe, reliable and efficient manner.
Composting advocates say the process is an excellent way to recycle organic waste such as vegetable scraps, grass clippings, leaves and other materials, and turn them into a useful and valuable product.
For the third year, the authority is organizing free workshops to show residents how to recycle the “good garbage” that is typically put out with the trash.
Host municipalities will provide free composting bins to a member from each family that attends a workshop.
All workshops are on Saturdays, from 10 to 11 a.m.
Workshop pre-registration is required to ensure every family attending receives a home composting bin. Residents should register with the municipal recycling coordinator where the workshop is being held. Workshops are limited to the first 40 people to register for each venue.

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will conduct the workshops on the basics of composting, materials that should be used, and the issues of temperature and moisture. Activity books will be provided for children.
