HALIFAX (CP) – A 12-metre sloop out of Kingston, Ont., is under escort to Shippagan, N.B., after running into rough weather earlier Thursday in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Sub.-Lt. Alain Blondin of search and rescue says the Bagatelle called for help after it started taking on water in four-metre seas and 80 km-h winds between the Iles de La Madeleine and the New Brunswick coast.

Two coastal patrol vessels, the Moncton and the Kingston, were sent to help along with a Hercules aircraft and a Cormorant helicopter.

The four people on board were eventually able to deal with their water problem but asked for an escort to calmer waters.

They are all OK and the aircraft have since returned to base.
