Arctic Lakes Exposed to New Dangers As Climate Change Eats into Ice Cover

Posted on: Monday, 13 August 2007, 15:22 CDT

MONTREAL (CP) - Canada's Arctic lakes are undergoing major changes as global warming increasingly eats into their ice cover.

Researchers at an international conference on water in Montreal say rising temperatures are leaving their fragile ecosystems exposed to harsh new conditions. They say some smaller bodies of water are even drying up because of the warmer temperatures.

The researchers look to Arctic lakes as important warning systems for the dangers that other bodies of water can face.

But they also warn that climate change is only one among several problems facing northern lakes, which are equally threatened by acid rain and over-fertilization.

The conference, which gathers some 1,500 experts from around the world, runs until Saturday.
