A wind-whipped wildfire in Montana spread to homes, and area residents struggled to evacuate pets and livestock.

The homes burned Thursday were on either side of the Black Cat fire, one of several wildfires burning in Montana, the Missoulian reported.

Officials on Thursday conservatively estimated that the Black Cat fire had spread to 850 acres, the newspaper reported. The fire was burning between Frenchtown and Evaro Hill, Mont.

Strong wind gusts made the fire’s path unpredictable and forced officials to intermittently close U.S. Route 93. Friday morning, alternating lanes of the highway were open.
