Angling: West is Best for Fontburn Anglers
By GEORGE MACINTYRE
ANGLERS willing to walk the western boundaries at Fontburn Reservoir in the hot beginning to the week were rewarded with excellent sport this week with many recording limit bags – including Derek Todd who had eight for 24lb.
The cooler weather later in the week brought more fish on to the feed. Jack Vout took full advantage of this to land his eight-fish bag within four hours.
Northumberland County Blind Association hold their annual competition at the reservoir on August 23. Competitors can either register on the day or telephone 01670 514316 for more details.
Duncan Bolam has landed one of the 25 golden trout released into Kielder Water as part of the reservoir’s 25th anniversary. The nine- pound trout, taken on spinner, wins Duncan a three-day holiday in one of Northumbrian Water’s cabins at Leaplish.
Elsewhere on the water, J Clark landed the heaviest rainbow of the week – a hard-fighting fish of 5lb 2oz taken at the south abutment lodge. James Dinning, fishing worm, had the week’s heaviest bag with eight for 22lb 5oz at Little Whickhope.
Bait anglers opting to use long-distance casting continue to enjoy the best of the sport at Scaling Dam with the west end of the dam wall from the lodge to 30 yards past the “dog leg” proving the most productive area. Fly anglers have also reported good catches in the evenings. The best catch of the week at Blackton was recorded by K James with a bag of 17lb. Anglers opting for floating lines with Hoppers and Heather Fly enjoyed the best of the action although smaller lures on intermediate or slow sinking lines also took fish in the brighter conditions.
The warm, settled weather of the last week brought the fish on to the feed at Grassholme where first-time anglers Lauren and Alexandra Tulson, aged 12 and 10 respectively, landed five rainbows for 10lb 7oz.
Many fish have been taken in the top of the water column with floating lines working well.
