Fire Leaves 4 Homeless: Firefighters Faced Extra Hazards at Taber Avenue Group Home

Aug. 22–Hot weather, fallen power lines and a burning gas meter challenged Yuba City firefighters battling a single-alarm house fire Tuesday afternoon on Taber Avenue.
Fire crews contained most of the fire in 10 to 15 minutes after arriving, but the blaze was not fully under control for an hour because of a burning gas meter that had to be secured by PG&E, said Yuba City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Julian.
The two-bedroom home at 846 Taber was a residence for Buddy’s House, a for-profit program for clean and sober adult transitional living, said Roger Anderson, director of the program.
Anderson said other living arrangements will be found for the four residents at the house who were left homeless by the blaze.
The cause of the fire and damage estimates were not immediately available. No one was injured in the blaze, which was reported at 12:56 p.m.
About 20 firefighters and five engines responded — a large number of resources for the fire as firefighters were rotated in and out of the heat Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature was 98 degrees for the 24-hour period ending at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
“It was a single-alarm fire that we brought in additional resources for because of the heat,” said Julian.
Marysville and Sutter County firefighters assisted by covering fire stations while Yuba City crews fought the blaze.
Fallen power lines near the house that were live for a half-hour presented an additional hazard for firefighters.
Most of the fire was in the garage, with some flames spreading into the attic.
