Fit energy-saving light bulbs: they last up to 12 times longer and require less power to operate, reducing CO2 emissions by 70 per cent and each bulb could cut lighting costs by up to pounds 13 a year.

Switch to a renewable electricity provider that uses wind, solar and water power to fuel your home instead of pollutants, such as coal and oil.

Switch it off: Leaving electrical items on stand-by is a waste of valuable energy and money.

Insulate your home and save up to pounds 238 a year on fuel bills.

Turn your heating down one degree and save 10 per cent on your bill.

Buy a rainwater tank that can provide water for your toilets, washing machine and garden, and can halve the amount of mains water you currently use.

Where possible, use public transport, a bike or walk instead of driving a car, especially for short journeys.
