Western Progress Names New Deputy Director

Sarah Bates Van de Wetering, a natural resources policy scholar and legal advocate active in community affairs, is the new Missoulabased deputy director for policy and outreach with Western Progress. The nonpartisan group advocates progressive solutions in the Rocky Mountain West. Van de Wetering has worked throughout the region in her two decades as a natural resources policy scholar and legal advocate. She also was an elected member of the 2004-06 Missoula City Local Government Study Commission. Van de Wetering currently serves as vice president of the Clark Fork Coalition, works as a CourtAppointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children in the state court system and formerly served on the board of the parent cooperative Clark Fork School.
She also serves as a member of the advisory board, of the University of Wyoming’s Ruckelshaus Institute of Environment and, Natural Resources. In 2000, the Rockefeller Foundation selected her for participation in its Next Generation Leadership Program.
Van de Wetering has published five books and many reports and articles. Her most recent article on the linkage between land use and water planning was recognized as one of the 10 top articles of the year by Land Use & Environmental Law Review, a national legal journal. She joins Northern Rockies Director Pat Williams, Deputy Director Steve Woodruff and research assistant Brad Hash in the Northern Rockies office of Western Progress at 526 E. Front St.
