WALES: Toxic Algae Alert in River

RESIDENTS have been warned to steer clear of a river running through a nature reserve with potentially toxic bright green algae.

The blooms on Anglesey’s Afon Cefni could cause skin rashes and severe illness if swallowed.

Farmers and pet owners should also make sure that their animals do not come into contact with the water and keep them from drinking from the river, Environment Agency Wales warned yesterday.

If the algae is toxic, it has the potential to be fatal to pets and livestock.

It has been found where the river flows through the Dingle Nature Reserve and continues through Llangefni.

If anyone has come into contact with water from the Cefni, they should seek medical advice
