Sep. 2–A beach full of dead fish greeted some trying to enjoy Labor Day weekend at Bolivar Peninsula.

Bonnie Baker of Beaumont saw thousands of small dead silver-colored fish floating in Rollover Pass and lying on the beach to the west of the fish pass.

She intended to spend Saturday night at her beach house, but headed back to Beaumont because of the smell.

“I couldn’t stay. Even inside the house it was horrible,” Baker said by telephone.

Baker said the fish, which she knows as shad, were all about four inches long.

Dispatchers with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department said they had received no reports of a fish kill.

Attempts to reach Texas Parks and Wildlife biologists Saturday were unsuccessful.
