The outdoor loo on a cliffside in the Copeland Islands is famed far and wide as a spot where the walker in need can contemplate one of Ulster’s most magnificent views while enjoying a comfort break – thanks to the half stable door that reveals the sea vistas beyond.

Twenty members of staff from Northern Ireland Water’s asset management section and OneAM consultants rounded up family members to help restore the water supply to the famous flush toilet, as well as a catalogue of other tasks to help the Copeland Island Observatory.

The work involved digging out an ancient and silted-up well within a small natural cave on the eastern cliffs of the Copeland Islands – one of Northern Ireland’s best loved wildlife hotspots. The team were also given a talk on the work of the observatory while enjoying spectacular views of Belfast Lough, the Antrim Coast and the Mournes.

The island lies off the Co Down coast at the southern side of Belfast Lough and the observatory is run by the British Trust for Ornithology to collect data on birds.

Paddy Brow of Northern Ireland Water said it was great to have the opportunity to help members of the observatory.

He also appealed to members of the public to protect waterways by being careful what is flushed down the toilet, as refuse can eventually find their way into habitats and harm wildlife.
