MADRID, Spain – A fishing boat capsized in rough seas in the Strait of Gibraltar on Wednesday, leaving three crew members dead and five missing, Spanish maritime rescue officials said.

Another vessel managed to rescue eight crew members from the stricken boat, based in the southern town of Barbate, said the Maritime Rescue headquarters in nearby Tarifa.

The fishing boat Nueva Pepita Aurora flipped over in seas with 10-13 foot waves and winds gusting at up to 50 mph, rescue center director Adolfo Serrano, said.

The boat was registered in Spain, but the nationality of the crew was not immediately known, Serrano said.
