A LEVY may be introduced on incinerators to dissuade their use under a major review of the country’s waste management policy, it has emerged.

Environment Minister John Gormley believes incinerators, if seen as landfill alternatives, would undermine efforts to improve recycling.

‘I do not see why incineration should not be subject to the same financial regime as landfills,’ he said.

Mr Gormley was speaking at a two-day Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conference in Dublin and added environmental protection was a priority for the Government.

‘Making the environment a principal priority is vital for the continued success of Ireland and its economy,’ he said.

Mr Gormley also launched ENVision at the conference, an online map which allows people to check the quality of their local environment.
