Sep. 13–Health officials issued a swim advisory for a portion of Surfside Beach after elevated levels of bacteria were found during testing by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, according to an ocean water quality advisory.

The area 200 feet above and below the Fifth Avenue North swash was placed under the advisory after heavy rains on Wednesday and Thursday. Additional samples will be taken today and released Friday.

Since high bacteria levels were detected in this section of the beach and swimming is not advised until bacteria levels return to normal. Other uses of the beach, which include shell hunting, walking in the surf or sunning, are not affected.
