Chicken of the Sea wild-caught salmon now bears certification by the Marine Stewardship Council, in recognition of Chicken of the Sea International’s commitment to the health and sustainability of the world’s oceans.

Chicken of the Sea’s canned and pouched salmon is believed to be the first consumer-branded, shelf-stable seafood product to receive MSC certification, which demonstrates dedication to operating with concern for the world’s environment and natural resources — specifically, environmentally responsible fishery management and practices. Packaging on wild-caught salmon now contains MSC’s official seal acknowledging Chicken of the Sea’s practices.

“Since our company began in 1914, Chicken of the Sea International has been steadfastly committed to operating with care and concern for the world’s environment, oceans and for our precious natural resources,” said John Signorino, CEO and president of Chicken of the Sea International. “We are proud to receive this certification from MSC, and will continue to make choices with the goal of preserving the oceans for future generations.”

Earlier this year, Chicken of the Sea International instructed its tuna suppliers to suspend business practices with Far Ocean Sea Products of Singapore, which was found to be using gillnetting to catch tuna in violation of the company and United Nations’ sustainability policy banning gillnetting in worldwide waters. In announcing it in January, Signorino said: “It’s the right thing to do, and we’ll only work with businesses that support our practice of protecting the world’s oceans.”

The MSC is an independent, global, nonprofit organization that rewards fishery management and practices that are environmentally responsible with MSC’s distinctive blue seal. Additional information regarding MSC can be found online at www.msc.org.

A seafood category leader, Chicken of the Sea provides a variety of shelf-stable seafood products, including tuna, salmon, crab, shrimp, oysters, clams, mackerel and sardines. The Chicken of the Sea brand and famous Mermaid icon are among the most recognized brands in America.
