ENSR Assists Offshore California LNG Project

ENSR is providing environmental permitting and pipeline engineering support for the OceanWay liquefied natural gas (LNG) project located 28 miles off Los Angeles, California. ENSR, part of AECOM, is a leading global environmental services provider.

The OceanWay project will provide natural gas to California, which currently uses natural gas for 40% of its electricity needs. The project will be built and operated by Woodside Natural Gas Inc., a subsidiary of Woodside Energy, one of Australia’s largest oil and gas energy companies. The project will employ specially designed regasification ships, a receiving and transfer station east of the Los Angeles airport, and dual 35-mile pipelines. An additional pipeline will connect the receiving and transfer station to the existing gas network.

In addition to environmental permitting and pipeline engineering work, ENSR is performing site investigations of sediments proposed for dredging, negotiating with local fisheries groups, and supporting public outreach programs. “The OceanWay LNG plant is a milestone project for California, and we are elated to contribute,” remarked Dr. Paul Smokler, ENSR vice president and regional business development director. “It will provide clean-burning natural gas to California as the state moves forward in regulating greenhouse gas emissions. And it will do so in a clean, safe and secure way, with a minimal environmental footprint.”

Natural gas is one of the cleanest-burning and most widely used energy sources currently available. But its rising popularity as an alternative to more carbon-intensive energy sources has resulted in rapidly increasing worldwide demand. The OceanWay project would represent the first LNG project approved for the West Coast, as previous LNG projects have stalled or been denied.
