Zimbabwean Industry Urged to Preserve Natural Resources

Zimbabwean industry urged to preserve natural resources

HARARE, Dec. 3, (Xinhua) -- Industrialists in Zimbabwe have been urged to adopt a culture of corporate accountability to ensure that natural resources in the south African country are preserved for future generations.

At an industrial seminar held here Friday, environmental management expert Andrew Gona said new economic growth had resulted in more patterns of pollution, loss of habitat and competition for natural resources, hence the need for proper management.

"We have to adopt the concept of naturalism, that is, industry processes must act like living systems," he was quoted by New Ziana news agency as saying.

"We must adopt re-manufacturing and recycling strategies thus reducing waste from discard. All by-products of one system must become nutrients of another," Gona said.

Use of waste from other industrial processes reduced costs in the area of power consumption, fuel consumption, and eventually led to improved output, he said.

He urged industrialists to acquire knowledge of what other industries produced so as to have a good base for symbiotic relations.

"Let us all enable others to live a worthy life by conserving nature and by keeping the world safe and clean through looking to waste as technical nutrients for our processes," he said.

Percy Toriro, Principal Town Planner, and Environmental Coordinator in the Harare city council, said industry needed to be self regulated to effectively address common concerns.

"Industry should have clear waste management and discharge regulations, and should jointly address problems through informing each other prior to crises," said Toriro.

Common environmental hazards include land degradation, dust emission, green house gas emissions, scrap metal waste and liquid waste.
