HK's population increases by 0.4 percent

HONG KONG, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department indicated Hong Kong's population was 6.81 million at the end of June this year, an increase of 29, 000 people or 0.4 percent over the end of June last year.

The press release showed the overall population increased 29, 000 from mid-2002 to mid-2003, comprising a natural increase of 13, 500 and a net inflow of 15,500 residents.

The ratio of natural increase to overall population increase was 47 percent, while that of net inflow was 53 percent.

The press release said both births and inflow of One-way Permit Holders (OWPHs) were important constituents of the overall population increase.

The ratio of the number of births, at 48,700 during mid-2002 to mid-2003, to the overall population increase over the same period was 168 percent. The ratio of the inflow of OWPHs, at 50 300, to the overall population increase was 173%.

Deaths would in the meantime offset part of the increase. The ratio of the number of deaths, at 35,200, to the overall population increase was 121 percent.

It should be noted that the population figure does not include visitors. The number of visitors present in Hong Kong as at mid- 2003 was 188,600.
