Teen Hurt in Crash Loses Dog: Chihuahua May Have Wandered Off
By Robin Fitzgerald, The Sun Herald, Biloxi, Miss.
Oct. 2–GULFPORT — A Baton Rouge teen critically injured in a crash near Gulfport would feel much better if he could find a pet that disappeared in the accident, a relative said.
Roger Parker, 17, has been under intensive care since early Friday, when his 1987 Honda Accord flipped on Interstate 10 West near the 22-mile marker. One of his two female Chihuahuas, Chi-Chi, was retrieved, but the loss of the other, Chewey, weighs heavily on Parker’s mind, said his grandmother, Connie Gould.
“We don’t know if Chewey was thrown out and died or if she wandered off and someone picked her up or took her in,” Gould said. “It would mean everything in the world to him to get her back.”
Parker was returning home around 2:30 a.m. from a visit with friends. He planned to enroll today at a community college near his home.
Relatives on Monday expected Parker to be discharged from Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, with doctors’ orders to find a neurologist near his home for continuing treatment. He suffered brain hemorrhage from the crash. Emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life to remove him from his car.
Officers took Chi-Chi to the Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulfport. A relative retrieved her later Friday.
Chewey is small, tan and white. Parker needs treatment to help with slurred speech, but knowing Chewey is safe would give him peace of mind, Gould said.
A van towing a Jeep crashed after a tire blowout in the same area later Friday. No injuries were reported in that accident.
