Gardens: Tranquil Oasis of Calm is a Labour of Love
SOW hardy annuals, sweetpeas and lettuces to overwinter under glass.
Plant spring-flowering hardy annuals and biennials.
Plant windowboxes and hanging baskets for winter interest.
Keep weeding and hoeing but don’t be too tidy. Leave seedheads for the birds to eat and some cover where insects can hibernate.
Clear tomato, aubergine and pepper plants away.
Remove yellowing leaves from cabbages, Brussels sprouts and broccoli, which encourage botrytis and grey mould.
Apply greasebands to apples and pear trees to control winter moth caterpillars.
Begin transferring half hardy fuchsias from borders into pots large enough to hold the rootball, ready to house in a frost-free place over winter.
Start winter digging, incorporating well-rotted farmyard manure or compost.
