China Eyeing World's Largest National Park

Officials in northern China are finalizing plans to create the world's largest national park by consolidating regional tourist resorts.
The potentially record-breaking endeavor in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would focus on incorporating area resorts and grassland into the Kanas Geological Park, China's official Xinhua news agency said Saturday.
Park administration committee head Tan Weiping said the plan would allow the park to become nearly 10 times its current size of 621 square miles, while still protecting the region's wildlife.
The new national park is helpful to protect the unique natural scenery, wildlife and cultural relics here, Tan said.
Tan also remarked about the increased tourism around the park, something he said has been both beneficial and detrimental to the area.
Local residents have set up many wooden restaurants and family inns nearby the lakes and in the forests over the past years, which have caused pollution to the environment, he told Xinhua.
