Black and White Ball: The Urban League of Rhode Island, 246 Prairie Ave., will hold its 18th annual Black and White Ball from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Newport, Goat Island.

BDPA banquet: Rhode Island Black Data Processing Associates will hold its third annual Education and Scholarship Banquet on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Johnson & Wales Inn, Seekonk.

Nominees sought: The deadline for nominations for induction into the Cape Verdean Heritage Hall of Fame has been extended to Friday, Nov. 30.
A nominee must be of Cape Verdean decent and have contributed to the history, prominence and heritage of the Cape Verdean community.
He/she must have established his/her reputation in the New England area.
A nomination letter, a biography (no longer than two pages) and a 5×7 photo may be sent to: Cape Verdean Heritage Hall of Fame, c/o The Cape Verdean Museum Exhibit, P.O. Box 14187, East Providence, RI 02914.
Nomination is not tantamount to election to the Cape Verdean Heritage Hall of Fame.

Scholarship dinner: “Changing the World through Education and Diversity” is the theme of the Rhode Island chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women’s annual scholarship dinner at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, 60 Rhodes Place, Cranston.
A reception at 6 p.m. will be followed by dinner at 7.
Joan Countryman, former interim head of Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, will be the guest speaker.

NAACP dinner: The Providence branch of the NAACP will hold its 94th annual Freedom Fund dinner, “Power Beyond Measure,” on Friday at the Providence Marriott, Charles and Orms streets.

Guest speakers are attorney Jametta O. Olston, child advocate of Rhode Island, and Tony Brown, senior vice president, global purchasing, for Ford Motor Company.

Volunteers needed: The Urban League of Rhode Island, 246 Prairie Ave., is seeking volunteers for its childcare programs.
The Before and After School Program for children ages 5 to 12 needs volunteers to assist with homework and activities.
Volunteers are needed to provide educational support to teachers in the Early Learning Center which serves children ages 18 months to 5 years old.
Programs operate Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Volunteers may choose hours of participation. Training will be provided.
