Science students in Uganda to get 75 percent of gov’t varsity funds

KAMPALA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) — Ugandan Ministry of Education has announced it would allot 75 percent of its student sponsorship to science students starting next year, reported local press on Monday.

Minister of Education Khiddu Makubuya was quoted as saying this was a move to improve economic and social transformation in the east African country.

“Science subjects are important for the survival of this nation, ” Makubuya said.

He said all children attending any school, private or public, shall be given the opportunity to study science subjects irrespective of gender or sex, starting next year.

He urged head teachers to popularize teaching and learning of science subjects by constructing laboratories.

The minister called upon schools to prepare teachers competent in science through a job-oriented curriculum.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has in many circumstances said the country would pay attention to science and technology development.
