A woman has a passing fishing boat to thank for being alive after drifting for nearly 19 hours in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii.
Lillian Ruth Simpson, who only recently had moved to Hawaii from Alaska, said after she was forced to abandon her capsized canoe Friday, she stayed alive by holding onto a floating water container and trying to stay as warm as possible, the Maui (Hawaii) News said Sunday.
I just started shivering so bad with the wind chill factor on my shoulders and head, the 49-year-old said of her oceanic ordeal. And then I'd swim. I'd make myself swim to keep my body warm.
After nearly 19 hours alone in the choppy ocean, Simpson was spotted by a fishing boat captain and received medical treatment for dehydration.
One of the captain's crew applauded Simpson for being able to survive so long in such a potentially deadly situation, the newspaper reported.
She was a pretty tough lady for being alone in the water all those hours crew member Dana Klingman said. We got her inside, sat her down. She was really thirsty and hungry.
