Panelists Debate the Question on Protecting the World: How Safe Is Safe?

Istanbul (PRWEB) September 14, 2011

With a growing population in a dynamic world, how do we adequately protect people and the world we share in a sustainable way? This was the focus of A Global Collaboratory on Protection, a debate this evening organized by DuPont and moderated by Gavin Esler, regular presenter on the BBC.

The increasing complexity of industrialization, demographic and geographic shifts in the global workforce and the unprecedented scale of urban growth, particularly in the developing world, all present daunting protection challenges today.

âœAt DuPont, we recognize that to address these global challenges, we must work collaboratively with customers and other partners to deliver scientific innovations including better ways to protect people at work, home and all areas in between,â said DuPont Executive Vice President Mark P. Vergnano. âœWe are convinced that solutions are found in the invigorating, inspiring exchange that comes from collaboration and collective ingenuity.â

This event was the second in a planned series of debates designed to explore and seek solutions to three of the worldâs greatest challenges: how to adequately feed the rapidly growing global population, how to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and how to protect people and the environment in the face of increasing complexity and constant change. These events are being held around the world to stimulate and extend the global conversation around these issues in a way that leads to sustainable solutions.

For this A Global Collaboratory on Protection, panelists focused on the topic: âœProtecting the World: How Safe is Safe?â The forum provided a platform for a wide-ranging conversation on how collaboration can address safety challenges through a combination of innovative technologies and a renewed focus on workplace culture. The conversation identified obstacles, allowed experts to share best practices and discussed how governments, individuals and organizations can be more proactive in our approach to global safety. Panelists included:

  •     Kasim Ozer, director general of Occupational Health and Safety at the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security;
  •     Seiji Machida, director of Programme on Safety and Health at Work and the Environment (SafeWork), the International Labour Organization (ILO);
  •     Hans-Horst Konkolewsky, secretary general of the International Social Security Association (ISSA);
  •     Andrew Sharman, Environment, Health & Safety director, Owens-Illinois Inc.;
  •     Simon Herriott, global managing director, Safety Resources, DuPont Sustainable Solutions.

âœOccupational health and safety is a rising value of working life,â said Kasim Ozer, director general of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security. âœIt is very crucial for our country being focused by the employers on occupational health and safety without any economic concern. This approach will increase the status of OHS to a desired level when it is accepted both by employees and employers and promoted by the government,â Ozer added.

The event provided a unique opportunity to discuss the impact of population issues on individuals, communities, businesses and governments all around the world â“ and more importantly, what they are doing to address them.

In addition to this debate moderated by Gavin Esler, DuPont sponsors the BBC World News documentary series Horizons, a program focused on exploring how businesses around the world work collaboratively to solve some of the pressing challenges we face today and well into the future.
