Houston, TX (PRWEB) September 23, 2011

Attorneys at the leading national law firm of Shrader & Associates extend their support to those affected by Hurricane Irene. As these lawyers are focused on assisting individuals harmed by toxic chemicals, they feel inclined to alert North Easterners to the possible threat of asbestos in the debris of damaged buildings.

In the course of the storm, winds up to 75 miles per hour and widespread flooding caused damage to many buildings in the affected states. At least 40 were confirmed dead, struck by falling trees or caught in floodwaters. As these resilient communities begin to rebuild, Shrader & Associates attorney Robert Shuttlesworth said they face another hazard.

âœAny structures built before the 1980s are likely to contain asbestos,â Shuttlesworth said. âœWhen these buildings are disturbed, as they were by Irene, the asbestos dust becomes a danger to those who inhale it.â

Shuttlesworth said exposure to asbestos fibers is a known cause of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer in the lungâs outer lining. Inhaled asbestos fibers lodge themselves in the lining and over time can cause tumors to develop. While mesothelioma treatments are available, there is no known cure for the disease, he said.

The Environmental Protection Agency warned those assisting with post-storm cleanup to take every precaution. Crumbly, dry or dusty materials pose the highest risk. The EPAâs list of materials that are likely to contain asbestos include vinyl floor tiles, insulation, pipes, roofing materials and wallboard among countless others.

âœDonât risk your health if you know your house was built before 1980, especially if you are aware of materials containing asbestos,â Shuttlesworth said. âœIn this business, we hear too many sad stories to keep this information to ourselves.â

Those who already may have been exposed to asbestos should consider taking legal action. Shrader & Associates offers a complimentary legal consultation. Anyone interested should call (888) 637-6236 or go to http://www.shraderlaw.com to learn about their familyâs legal rights.
