BSI Committed to 'Raising Standards Worldwide' in Chemical Industry Management System Verification

RESTON, Va., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- BSI Management Systems has the most certified auditors on staff to verify the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturer Association's (SOCMA) ChemStewards(R) Management System.
To date, nine auditors -- three from BSI -- have been certified to audit this sector-specific management system designed to help organizations manage their environmental, health, safety and security issues.
"Our company's slogan is 'Raising Standards Worldwide,' and we are doing just that both externally and internally within BSI," said Wil Wang, certified lead auditor and marketing manager for business sustainability. "BSI is dedicated to helping our in-house staff develop the high-caliber qualifications necessary to provide best practices in verification services for our clients, who are committed to sustainable management in their respective fields.
"We will ensure our early entry into the market by providing certified auditors to verify this sector-specific management system and present an advantage for our customers, as they seek best practice and to become industry leaders in sustainable management."
ChemStewards(R) is intended for use in chemical manufacturing facilities, and more information about the new management system can be found at http://www.bsiamericas.com/ChemStewards .
Wang noted that this new chemical industry initiative dovetails nicely with efforts by the Department of Homeland Security, which is finalizing a regulation for potentially high-risk chemical facilities.
Part of the regulation is Appendix A, DHS's list of chemicals of interest, which includes chemicals that the department deems present one or more security issues. Appendix A currently contains more than 200 chemicals commonly used beyond the chemical industry and may be found in electronic, wafer processing or industrial manufacturing, to name a few. The final version of the rule, which the industry hopes will list fewer chemicals, is expected sometime this month.
