The Laurel School Appoints Hal Hensler as Head of School

The Laurel School announced today it has appointed Hal Hensler as the Head of School. The Laurel School, located in San Francisco, serves students in K-8th grades with learning differences and students who benefit from a small class size. In addition to being a long-time educator, Hal was also a pro baseball player with the Detroit Tigers.

The Laurel School announced today it has appointed Hal Hensler as the Head of School. The Laurel School, located in San Francisco, serves students in K-8th grades with learning differences and students who benefit from a small class size.

“Hal Hensler served as The Laurel School´s interim Head of School for several months and we got to see him in action,” said Maureen Harrington, president of The Laurel School board. “The positive feedback we got from faculty and parents was immediate and extremely encouraging. We know Hal is a great choice for The Laurel School because of his experience as a teacher and an administrator and because of the way he has embraced The Laurel School community and our vision for the future of the school.”

Hal Hensler has an MS from Pepperdine University, a BA in chemistry and biology from Chapman University in Orange, CA and has had both teaching and administration roles during his almost 40 year career in education. Before joining The Laurel School, he was Head of School at Blue Oak School in Napa, CA where he completed the Schools Attuned training and implemented it for the faculty. Before being an educator Mr. Hensler played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers.

My priorities at Laurel are to ensure all teachers and students have the tools for success, reassure each parent that their child is gaining the skills needed for the next level of education, open the school to more families who need tuition assistance and, of course, implement Schools Attuned neurodevelopmental program.”

Before the start of the 2011-2012 school year The Laurel School´s core classroom teachers participated in the Schools Attuned® four-day instructional program. The nationally recognized curriculum helps educators leverage students’ strengths and focus on neurodevelopmental aspects such as attention, ordering, memory language and higher order cognition to help students of all learning styles be more successful in school.

To support opening the school to as many students as possible, The Laurel School recently created the Marcia Spitz Opportunity Fund to raise $100,000 for the school´s tuition assistance program. Marcia Spitz founded the school in 1965 and taught at the school until June 2011. Approximately 30 percent of families with students enrolled in The Laurel School currently receive tuition assistance.
