Good Vibrations, the trusted women-focused source for over 35 years for sexual health and wellness products, sex toys, vibrators, books, educational materials, and information was pleased to co-sponsor the west coast premiere of Hysteria in their home town during the venerable film festival which is the world’s longest running film festival. The crowd was delighted by the romantic comedy period piece directed by Tanya Wexler and clapped loudly and enthusiastically when images from Good Vibrations’ Antique Vibrator Museum (http://www.antiquevibratormuseum.com) appeared onscreen during the roll credits. Hysteria is set in Victorian England during the age of medical transformation and discovery, specifically around women’s health issues and the supposed affliction called Female Hysteria which was then considered a medical condition that doctors often prescribed surgeries, institutionalization, sedation, and for the women who could afford it, manual stimulation administered by a medical doctor. The advent of the electric vibrator helps ‘cure’ the patients in record time and while still being considered a medical device helps pave the way for female pleasure, empowerment, and ownership of their own bodies and orgasms. Good Vibrations has collected antique vibrators since opening its first store in 1977 and their museum is located on Polk St. in San Francisco.
