SNHU Adds New Online Degree in Math to Math Degree Options

May 23, 2012

Earning a math degree, now available online and on campus, from Southern New Hampshire University provides valuable training for a wide range of careers.

Manchester, NH (PRWEB) May 22, 2012

With businesses generating data at an accelerating rate, the demand for professionals who can interpret this data is accelerating too. Employers in a range of industries are seeking college graduates with quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills, the key skills of graduates with a traditional or online degree in math.

Students in Southern New Hampshire University´s Bachelor of Arts on-campus day program in math and the new online degree in math develop these skills. The math programs foster advanced abilities in mathematical methods, reasoning and problem solving in three main areas of math: analysis, algebra and statistics. Course work includes extensive training in problem solving and proof writing that focuses on real-world applications in fields such as business, economics, and the natural and social sciences.

As SNHU students work on their undergraduate math degrees online or on campus, they will complete 33 credits in math courses. They also can choose two math electives based on their particular interest in math, including applied mathematics, theoretical mathematics and math education. Math is also offered as a minor. Students should ask an academic advisor for details.

“An undergraduate degree in math is a highly respected degree that gives students great training for a wide range of careers,” says Dr. Susan D´Agostino, SNHU assistant professor of mathematics and math major program coordinator. “As businesses and organizations do an increasing amount of research, they need people who can problem solve, which math majors are well poised to do. At Southern New Hampshire University, we also train math students in proof writing, which helps them develop their analytical and reasoning skills.”

Students with a traditional or online degree in math from SNHU could pursue careers in a wide variety of fields: business, actuarial firms, insurance agencies, financial services firms, utility companies, research firms and education.

Professionals with a degree in math are typically well compensated. A 2009 survey by the National Association of College and Employers determined that the college degrees with the top 15 highest earnings all include math components. For students wishing to pursue graduate studies, those with advanced studies in math often have higher scores on graduate entrance exams “• including the GMAT, GRE and LSAT “• which require analytical and problem-solving skills.
