(PRWEB) July 12, 2012
Summer of 2012 welcomes “growth” for the Ohio Orthopedic Center of Excellence Foundation “Biggest Winner Youth Challenge”. Entering its fourth year, the program that started as an injury prevention program for 10 local youth has now blossomed into a city wide summer camp including a curriculum of fitness, nutrition, self esteem and team building for nearly 300 of Columbus´ inner city youth.
For the first time in Biggest Winner history, a community garden has been planted at Thompson Recreation center aimed at serving the children and families surrounding the recreation center. New also to the Biggest Winner program for 2012 is the sharing of the fitness curriculum with all four of the “School Out” program organized by City of Columbus Parks and Recreation Department. All counted, approximately 300 kids will take part in this 9 week summer camp. Local Matters, Inc. will again bring their 9 week nutritional curriculum to Blackburn Recreation Center teaching an interactive program based on whole foods and including hands on seminars on food preparation and nutritional education.
The nutrition and fitness curriculum in conjunction with the community garden is aimed at equipping children and their families with the knowledge, resource, and access to good healthy food and lifestyle choices and to make a positive difference in healthy choices and behaviors for these wonderful youth of Columbus.
The camp will culminate at the “Biggest Winner Field Day” on Friday August 3rd at Howard Recreation Center. With support from the “Safe Kids” division of Johnson and Johnson as well as Anthem Insurance, The Biggest Winner Field Day will feature a traveling rocks and ropes course, injury prevention and safety stations, and fun games and activities as we bring the summer to a close.
